A Curated History of the Controversial Sexy Women Leggings

Women leggings originally peaked during the days of disco and Fonda in the 1970s.

Today the one-piece outfit is the talk of the fashion world, including its magazines.

Women leggings and skinny jeans are seemingly the trends that most women of all walks have embraced.

It is changing now as the first decade of the 21st-century marches toward its completion.

The one group that doesn’t need the information that leggings or leotards have come to stay is superheroes.

It may be argued that Halloween and the affinity of young boys for superheroes are what kept the leggings industry alive through the last decade.

“Leggings refer to several types of leg coverings.

Modern usage from the 1960s refers to elastic close-fitting garments worn over women’s legs, such as leg warmers or tights.

Usage from the 18th century refers to men’s wear, usually made of cloth or leather wrapped around the leg down to the ankle.

In the 19th century, leggings usually referred to as infants’ leg clothing matched with a jacket and leg-wrappings made of leather or wool and worn by soldiers and trappers.

Leggings prominently returned to women’s fashion in the 1960s, drawing from the form-fitting clothing of dancers.

With the widespread adoption of the synthetic fiber Lycra and the rise in aerobics’ popularity, leggings came to further prominence in the 1970s and ’80s and eventually made their way into streetwear.

Women Leggings became part of the late 2010s athleisure fashion trend of wearing activewear outside sporting activities.

And also in casual settings, which became a contentious social norm in the United States.”

When Women’s Leggings Controversy Did Began

It all started when two girls were barred from boarding a United flight for wearing leggings.

That happened on the 26th of March 2017.

“Another girl wearing gray leggings had to change before she was allowed to board the flight from Denver to Minneapolis, a witness said.

“She’s forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings, or they can’t board,” Shannon Watts, who was at a gate at Denver International Airport, said on Twitter. “Since when does @united police women’s clothing?”

United, responding to tweets about the incident, tweeted that “United shall have the right to refuse passengers who are not properly clothed via our Contract of Carriage.” And added, “This is left to the discretion of the agents.”

The airline’s passenger contract says for all passengers and crew members’ safety.

The airline can refuse to let a passenger board if the passenger is “barefoot or not properly clothed.”

Leggings

Even though it may seem that such news is a decidedly recent phenomenon, leggings or women leggings have been around for centuries.

Before they became a form of activewear, they were used for practical purposes.

For obvious reasons, the concept of pants — as opposed to skirts, kilts, or other clothing that doesn’t protect the legs individually — closely linked to the development of societies that used horses to get around, as described by T.C.F. Hopkins in Empires, Wars, and Battles: The Middle East From Antiquity to the Rise of the New World: “From Asia to Europe, the riders of horses are also the wearers of trousers.

The image of horsemen without leggings is a film convention, not a reflection of actual riding conditions.”

The term leggings date back centuries, but the first uses of the word applied to items that few of today’s yoga pants devotees would recognize as leggings.

In North American history, the term was often associated with the leg coverings worn by some Native Americans and eventually adopted by many settler frontiersmen.

Those leggings could often look more like high-top moccasins than pants, and for special-occasion use, artists would decorate them with beadwork or attach flattened porcupine quills to them.

Great Plains indigenous women wore leggings made out of hides from deer, elk, and various game animals.

The garments served not only a societal role — it was proper etiquette for women to keep their ankles covered — but also a practical one, protecting women’s legs from plants and animals, says Emil Her Many Horses, historian, and curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

Women’s Leggings Fashion

What is one of the most heated arguments you can have about clothing?

It’s likely the question that has been plaguing people for the past several years: “Can you wear leggings as pants?”

Whether you enjoy the comfort and full range of motion leggings-as-pants provides or consider leggings only a step up from wearing nothing at all, these form-fitting bottoms have become a necessary staple in just about every woman’s wardrobe.

While the debate about the validity of leggings is a recent one, the garment itself is not.

Leggings have been around for centuries, worn frequently by both men and women (yes, sometimes even as pants- and as you will see, sometimes even as chaps.)

But by 2005, they came back with a vengeance.

The first iteration was mainly cropped- these versions were memorably worn under mini denim skirts.

Of course, now women leggings come in a variety of styles and fabrics.

For example, leather (or leather-look) bottoms are very chic right now (and help the wearer avoid looking like they just came from the gym).

Whether you like leggings or not, designers continue to work them into looks- and people continue to wear them.

Women are the force to be acknowledged in a world ruled by men.

It is not, therefore, a surprise that the possible discrimination in this other fashion aspect.

Women are divine Art (just like men) in their outer aspect and their inner self.

Men tend to be unconsciously protective because they are our mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives.

It is something sacred whether we realized it or not, so we end up messing up things with our wrong decisions or ideas.

Women leggings elevate their beauty and power when well used.

Maybe this is the reason, in our humble opinion, that these types of controversy now and then appear.

Thank God, we live in a reasonably free society where some freedom still exists and can be expressed.

Women leggings are a fantastic fashion staple to use with style and class.

It is how they can raise a controversy or not; frankly, some women sometimes don’t help because of their lack of common sense.

Not all fashion suit everybody; let’s use some common sense and have self-respect.
